Darien Mayor Appointed to Governor’s 9-1-1 Advisory Council
Darien, Ga: Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue today announced the executive appointment of Darien Mayor Kelly S. Spratt to the Governor’s 9-1-1 Advisory Council.
Mayor Spratt will be holding one of three Georgia City positions on the 12-person Advisory Council that helps implement the “911” system throughout the state. The City of Darien is located in McIntosh County; one of the few counties in the state that has not implemented the 9-1-1 system.
The Governor’s 9-1-1 Advisory Council was established under Senate Bill 572 and signed into law in April 1998. This legislation shifted responsibility for 9-1-1 training and equipment standards to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA). The Council is responsible for encouraging and promoting the planning, development, and implementation of local “9-1-1” system plans; promulgating rules and regulations to establish minimum standards relating to training and equipment; and maintaining the registry of wireless service suppliers.
The members of the Council serve at the pleasure of the Governor and include the Director of GEMA, the Director of the Georgia Technology Authority, 3 cities, 3 counties, 4 experts in 911 management, and 2 telecommunications industry representatives. Mayor Spratt was nominated by the Georgia Municipal Association, the statewide organization that represents Georgia’s Cities, and a detailed background check was performed prior to the Governor’s selection.
Mayor Spratt, 40, is the owner of Open Gates Bed & Breakfast in Darien. She serves as a member of the McIntosh County Board of Health, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Coastal Advisory Council and on the Board of the Coastal Georgia Regional Development Center. She is also a member of the Professional Association of Innkeepers. Mayor Spratt earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and a master’s degree from Georgia Southern University. She and her husband, Jeff, have two children.
In accepting the nomination, Mayor Spratt said, “I am deeply honored by this appointment and the confidence Governor Perdue has in me. I look forward to helping implement this vital program throughout the state; and especially in my own community.”
